My neighbour, a lawyer, has always wanted her children to do everything society warns of, to an extent ... to be impressively daring in so many ways.

To that end she encourages them, all four, to do things I wouldn't always encourage.

Recently she posted photos of them jumping together (from a very high height!) into a river.

I was horrified by that. We all know how what's beneath the surface can change or be changed by others without our knowing.

My husband was an amanuensis for a student at Sydney university. He dived from a bridge into the sea,something he had done many times, and hit his head on some object. The end of his life as he knew it.

Of course we can't suddenly avoid all risks. That wouldn't be living, but mitigating them has its place too.
