I definitely agree, Maria!

I think Asian parents born before 1940 are the most exacting when it comes to pressuring kids. I try to give my folks some benefit of the doubt since they were born in the 1930s.

I guess the excuse is the widescale poverty there: they don’t want their kids suffering it.

In the US and other Western countries, I’ve noticed that the most ambitious parents tend to be upper middle class. Their parents tend to be better educated too. Education for them is a means of staying above the hoi polloi. They are also competing against their peers.
