About chickens…there was a time when I might have bought cheaper chicken, ignorant as I was of some alarming farming practices.
These days I would not. Nor would I order it in a restaurant, yes even the stylish eateries, (not to suggest that every restaurant serves factory-farmed chickens, but many do).
Thankfully, a few that have organic vegetable gardens at the back of their restaurants, also tend to have a number of chicken runs where our feathered friends make the most of life, plus feeding on the scraps from the rich man’s table.
We patrons are the beneficiaries.
On the other hand, broiler chickens, meaning chickens ‘raised for meat (aka “broiler chickens”) are farmed more intensively than any other type of animal. Around 90 per cent of the 650 million birds raised for meat in Australia come from factory farms.’
