When my daughter was younger I taught her to put one day between her feeling angry and then doing something about it. To this day she never ever loses her cool. Even at work when things get tense, she is able to step back and adopt a more measured approach to things.
For me at home, I do this ALWAYS.
I stop. I don't react initially, but take time to change my rhetoric. What comes out of my mid is always so much kinder. It stops all bad feelings.
