Sally and I started work on the same day. It was clear she was going to be the life and soul of the staffroom. Quick-witted, and always ready with a joke, I couldn’t help but admire her confidence.

But deep down she wasn’t so confident. Coming from the country, she had the deepest desire to live in a fancy house.

My personal thought? That she had married a man who already had a real estate investment, was icing on the cake.

She confessed to me one day that she hated Harry’s house.

His plain, red-brick house.

His boxy house.

His one-bathroom house.

His style-less house.

It didn’t matter that the mortgage on the house was very small. It just wasn’t the kind of house she’d planned for herself and her future family.

So she quietly planned, and made excuses about their little house, and talked more about the kind of house they were envisaging for the future. One day…soon.
