The man stood watching, fascinated.
Time and again the boy would pick up a stranded fish, cradling it in his hands, and escort it back into the ocean. What, he wondered, was he hoping for?
The previous night had been stormy, and that had created shallow ponds on the shoreline, where within these ponds were thousands of trapped fish. It had happened before and would happen again, he knew.
Still the boy continued.
And when the man could stand it no longer, he walked up to him and said, “Can’t you see it won’t work?”
The boy made no comment. Instead he continued to send the hapless fish back into the ocean. On a mission to save them, he would cup his hands reassuringly around their gasping bodies, fill his hands with water, and carefully walk into the sea, gently returning the fish to their homes.
