Thank you, Kunaal. Teaching is complicated, and it’s not easy to address fully, all demands of the curriculum, but there’s much that could be stripped back in the early years. The arts in particular, tends to lag behind in importance.
In one school where I taught, the graduating student of the year was always a student who excelled in sport. I spoke up for the arts, asking why this was neglected, but it didn’t get me far. It angered a few parents.
Of course there are other students who work hard, yet will never ever be chosen as SOTY. It’s fraught.
