Terence I loved every Asian child I taught, but let me tell you about one in particular. He was such a bright student, and well above most students academically, and yet, he had to do two hours' practice of music at the weekend, and go to Chinese classes. He came to me one day and said it was too much. He was breaking under the pressure. I spoke to his parents (had to be very cautious), and they did relax a little, but it was hard for them. However, I'm pretty sure that today, he would be making his own decisions.
Can you start with just the small things? Dealing with cultural assumptions is hard, but when you have family cultures conflicting with those where you live, that is so much more difficult.
Good luck with everything.
