They were angry like, shootin’ their rifles and pistols into the air. ‘We got ‘im!’ they screamed. They’d tied the black fella to the back of one of their horses, and were makin’ ‘im run. No man should run in that heat, Sheriff. I drew my gun and asked ‘em to let ‘im go. They answered by pointin’ their rifles and pistols at me, so I shot ‘em.”
