Shame about the book deal, Harry, but as always I am not surprised. They're always looking for their pound of flesh.
Family is and always will be, most important.
You could always choose to publish on Gumroad or Amazon.
If you could find someone to guide you through the formatting and editing, (you don't need to spend an arm and a leg) as well as advertising, and book covers you could do just a well, and you wouldn't have to be spending month away from home.
