Reading is a modelled practice. We always had a reading time in our home. Everyone read, pure and simple. The whole family.
With our daughter we read so many books at night, and there was no way we could short-circuit things.
On the odd nights when I was tired (I was a teacher) I would try to skip a few pages, thinking she must e as tired as I was.
Bu no, she would tell me I had to go ack to a particular page.
"How do you know?" I asked.
She'd go back a page and say something like, "That words says, but, so the next page says...."
She was already reading along, and I hadn't realized.
Writing was such an easy exercise for her, punctuation also easy. She's still a writer today.
