Prices here are also scary, but I try to eat fresh produce, simply because I've read too much about food and its manufacturing. If prices keep rising, we will just be very thin. Interestingly, I rarely waste food. I mentally plan ahead, and always cook for three meals (only two of us these days), but even so, I spend too much money.
