I’d like to share with you, the first few lines of a very old poem, written by a gifted poet, Thomas Gray. In the poem he paints an idyllic picture of life as it used to be, a life of hard work, an honest day’s toil, and a subsequent well-earned rest.

It’s a beautiful old poem, but I have only used the first two stanzas, that highlight and paint, the rhythm of life at the time.

Elegy Written In A Country Churchyard

‘The curfew tolls the knell of parting day,

The lowing herd winds slowly o’er the lea,

The plowman homeward plods his weary way,

And leaves the world to darkness, and to me.’

Now fades the glimm’ring landscape on the sight,

And all the air a solemn stillness holds,

Save where the beetle wheels his droning flight,

And drowsy tinklings lull the distant folds.’ Thomas Gray

Peace and solitude, an honest day’s work completed, and now to rest, all encapsulated in one verse.
