It wasn’t so hard to wake early. He’d set his mobile, and left his blinds up during the night. The combination would be a perfect alarm clock. And he was right. Who would have believed it? After the ferocious storm, calm reigned and the sun shone brightly from a cloudless blue sky. He was excited.

He checked his mobile — only six am and much too early to text his friend. He snuggled under his blanket, grateful for an extra bit of a sleep.

The next thing he knew it was well past eight, and he was instantly on the alert. The ride was due to start at eleven and whilst he had plenty of time to get there, it meant that he had much less time to work on his mum.

“Bugga!” he groaned again. “Big mistake. I closed my eyes!”

He checked his phone. No message. That probably didn’t mean too much. Doctors get busy, especially in casualty. He decided he’d wait and see. In a while he could confirm the ride but for now he needed to soft-soap his mum — not an easy job at the best of times!

Instantly bright and bubbly when he entered the kitchen, she began chattering like a parrot that had been gagged for most of its life. He was instantly on guard. He knew!
