Chapter 4: Bikers to the Rescue!

Suddenly the car was skidding out of control. She slammed on the brakes as the car swerved this way and that, zigzagging across the lanes of traffic, narrowly missing the cars to the front and to the left.

Mercifully it eventually veered off the road and into the boggy grass verge where it came to rest in a ditch. She realized then that she’d blown a tire.

“Blast!” she muttered to herself, oblivious to the near disasters she nearly caused. “Blast, blast, blast!” she muttered to nobody in particular. James wondered if ‘blast’ was any more forgivable than other expletives that people tend to use when they’re scared.

The blinding rain continued relentlessly, as she angrily threw open the door. Tossing her slippers, she eased herself onto the grass, and with the wind whipping her scant clothes around her legs, she wrestled to free the spare tire from the boot, mentally directing some angry words at her poor unsuspecting husband, who had insisted that the straps holding the wheel be drum-skin tight.

More words were muttered as the first and then the second of her newly-manicured nails snapped under the…
