Many Will Argue Against This ‘Truth’
Shaming happens when people find out that you now reside in Poverty Street. It’s why people are determinedly tight-lipped.
In this post I talked about a new reality in Australia, people, many middle-classed, turning to op shopping, and sharing in buy-nothing groups in order to make ends meet.
Or just to prepare for the inevitable interest rate rises!
As I thought about writing this post, I was reminded of a day out with my niece, a super-stylish young architect who dragged me into an op shop, all the while shaking her head at my snobbish reluctance to even set foot in the store.
That’s where she shopped, mostly, and she bought handsomely because she knew her labels, she was adept at making everything old new again, and always looked like she had money to burn.
Yet she was just a resourceful, somewhat impoverished student.
In recent times when everyone is digging into their craniums to determine how they can stretch their dollars, I kind of wish I had paid more attention to her, rather than ducking for cover in case somebody of note might happen to see me.
