When the young Australian Queensland teenager Alyssa Azar announced her plans to conquer Mount Everest, I wondered. This was a case of third-time-lucky for the nineteen-year-old, but given that it occurred just a few days after a Melbourne woman died close to the same summit of Everest, many of us held our breath.
‘Life and death are one thread, the same line viewed from different sides.’
There was sheer delight in Alyssa’s achievement, and yet, until she returned safely from the summit, to base camp, the challenge was not over.
As a nation we paused, and waited…and willed her on.
