I'm pretty sure I don't go one day without lying to myself. It's what we do to assure ourselves that things are not our fault, to save face, to avoid being judged, or to protect.

Sometimes one might lie to protect another from being judged ... this is more likely to occur when the stakes are high and the person is close to you.

It's not easy to tell the truth, because we care so we find ways around lying, sometimes at a huge cost to ourselves.

This suggests that rather than being bad people, liars are in many cases empathetic, protective, and caring of others.

For instance if you attended a dinner party where the food was less than average, you'd end the evening thanking your host for the wonderful company and delightful food.

You've lied, but it's for a good reason.

I'm afraid I am an inveterate liar!
