I used to do a similar exercise as a teacher. At the beginning of the year I'd get my students to write down all the things they regretted about the previous year, friendships, maybe something someone had said, fears they had about learning and so on.
We would then have a ceremonial burning and a little session of meditation, and then we were ready for a completely new year. The students loved it.
