I threw a whole drawerful of panty-hose away five years ago. I have few fond memories of them, or stockings, at all.

We used to keep a few sixpences for the occasion when our girdles failed us, which happened too often as far as I am concerned.

These days my daughter (when she has to attend meetings, because mostly she works from home), regardless of weather conditions, wears no stockings, and if wearing boots, will pop on sock anklets. Theirs is a much more free mode of dress.
