I remember our high-school English teacher reading out a friend's essay. It was full of 'inspiring' words. He mocked her mercilessly. Looking back I think she probably slaved over a dictionary to find words that would inspire him. Like you, she didn't get a terrific score. I did feel for her. She was a much more hard-working student than I was.
