I edited a piece just recently. It took me such a long time because the writer was pretty new and needed a lot of help.

On closer inspection, though it was in the queue, I found it had been published.

I too am guilty of privately correcting posts. The thing is, only you and the writer knows about it. It's not public.

Personally I would rather somebody tell me, than not.
