Hope you don't mind if I correct you here, Marcus. It was Robert Burns in his poem, 'To A Mouse'. The actual line was; The best-laid plans of mice and men gang aft agley. (go awry). Now there was a great poet. Shame you have to be Scottish to fully understand. :) STeinbeck may have used it, and why not?
