I still hold dear to the belief that kids should start school the year after they turn five.

It’s not a rule, by the way. It’s just my feeling, though based on experience.

So just for clarity, here in Ozland, if your child turns five between May and December, then they should, for the most part, be ready to embrace formal learning.

If, on the other hand, your child turns five in the year he starts kindergarten (January to the end of April), there’s reason to question whether they are ready for formal education, or not.

Levels of maturity

I’ve taught a lot of children over the years, some born in the early months of the year, and some turning a year older, just a month or two later, in the same year.

I can always tell. There’s a lot of maturity in a year, or nine or ten months, and those students gifted that time by their parents by not sending them to school until they are deemed ready, are always more assured.

They may not be more intelligent, they may be even less academically gifted, but they are always more assured…ALWAYS.
