Great article and your experiences are not so different from mine. I was born in Scotland, so came to Australia with a pronounced Scottish accent which, i think, has refined over time. But also the idiom changes when you embrace a new country and culture. As a teacher I had to quickly come to terms about some of the lingo.

I have an Indian doctor and these days, because she wears a mask, I often have no idea as to what she is saying. There again, the Scottish dialect is as strong as the Indian, and I think we all just have to make some adjustments, and refine some of our vowel sounds.
