Ever Been Told It’s Too Late For You?

With a change of mindset and determination, you can prove ’em wrong.

When was the first time that someone suggested to you that you were too old to do or have something? My first one was at the tender age of seven, but the one below is firmly etched in my memory, mostly because the outcome was positive.

Some years ago my husband and I went to live on Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea. It’s a small but delightful island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a place where you had to make your own fun…nowhere much to shop (even for food!), and very little to do in terms of organized recreation.

But the outdoor life was alive and well, lots of running, sport, and mu-mu (ing), something that takes barbecuing to a whole new level. The most delicious way to slow-cook food…but I digress!

In the first few days I was delighted to discover the Hash House Harriers, a world-wide running group. My husband and I were both serious runners, so this was a find!

And even more to my delight was the discovery that I could give most of them, all but two, a run for their money, if you pardon the pun!

One was the local PE teacher, and the other a very fit, almost new graduate teacher. Naturally they were going to be fitter, and…
