Didn’t you? Yes, I am a wee Scottish lassie, but have spent most of my life here in OZ. I have to practice my speaking when I meet up with family, not that I ever meant to lose my accent. It’s just that in teaching, as you’d appreciate, one has to ditch words (jotter — exercise book) and learn how to use diphthongs, to name but a few. Another thing you may not have known about me was my Catholic (IRISH) upbringing. I was talking to my sister the other day and I said I’d learned nothing at school, so her comeback was, well look at the big words we learned, transubstantiation , immaculate conception, holidays of obligation, divers tongues (I’m sure that was how it was pronounced…and if not, it was what I heard). None of this was explained, but somehow we intuited meaning. Anyway, it was a great trip down Memory Lane, and a reflection of the absurdity of it all. Can we still be friends? :)
