Dear Martha,

I am glad you saw more in this little girl, than the child clothed in tatters, with the stringy hair.

I'm glad you saw the internal beauty in this wonderful human who went on to achieve, to have her own children and then to do as you did, and tend a bunch of kids who needed love.

I'm glad you had faith in her potential. Sometimes all kids need is love, a refuge, an understanding mother bursting with so much to share, and if that is in place, we produce the Katies of this world. And guess what? They produce even more.

I'm so glad you took Katie under your wing. The fact is, that in doing so, you spread your love much further and wider than they eye can see.
