Let me ask you a question. Was there ever a time when you felt you couldn’t pay a bill?
It’s a frightening thought, is it not, knowing they’re coming after you.
Many poor people have been there, many young people too.
It’s not a good feeling.
It’s why people resort to hiding from debt collectors…the fear is all-consuming. It’s not that they don’t want to pay. It’s because they can’t.
They’re caught in a bind.
I once paid off a young friend’s debt.
It wasn’t a huge amount of money she owed, but enough for the powers that be to be threatening her.
I sensed her fear, so I asked her for the details and called the company.
But no they would not give me her details of the final bill.
“So let me get this clear,” I said. “Are you in the business of punishment, or of extracting money?”
