Chewing gum was not even a thing in my school days. Nor were we allowed it at home.

As for discipline...our headmaster used a strap. Looking back I believe he was a drunk, and he used his hangovers to get over them by belting the living daylights out of us kids. Gosh that reminds me of a situation.
