Bette this will fly in the face of your beliefs, but this is my theory.
Our gardens no longer play host to animals, food is lost to them, and entering your house is often a last resort to find food.
I'm sure they don't enjoy meeting up with a being far greater than they are.
An element of rewilding in anyone's garden would provide corridors for smaller animals.
You don't have to rewild your garden in its entirety, perhaps just a corner, and they will live and commute happily there.
In my garden I have a corner where I have some criss-crossed branches, and clippings. They are mostly hidden away, by vegetation, but even if they weren't, I'd be prepared to leave it for the sake of wildlife.
We all should be afforded our rightful places on the planet.
