In the event of nuclear war, how would you feel if you had access to the safest place on earth?

I read this story from Susie Kearley some time ago. It got me thinking. Would I WANT to survive a nuclear war? Or might I succumb to the idea that death would be kinder in the circumstance?

Way back in the 1950s there was a fear of nuclear war, and the government stepped in to help people prepare. Fortuitously the war didn’t eventuate.

Some of these bunkers still remain, though many were covered over.

But imagine if you could be custodian of such a bunker. How would that be?

It would certainly make you popular in the event of a nuclear catastrophe.

Susie wrote her story after visiting Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker in Essex, England. As a surprisingly-spacious dugout, it could be used for all manner of things, I’m thinking.

If you’re into cold-war history, this will be the place to start.
