And behaving as a child is not as random as one might think, Charles.

I remember my friend suggesting we jump off the second level of stairs, onto concrete.

I looked down and was immediately afraid, but I jumped to save face.

I still recall the pain coursing through my spine. THAT was the best lesson.

In forest schools children are allowed to take huge risks, always under the eye of their superiors, though the children don't know they are being observed.

They soon learn what they can and can't do. They progress incrementally, as you did, talking to small groups and then on to more challenging situations as you did.
