All It Took Was One Boisterous Christmas Party
To realise my hearing was not as good as I thought
My family is quietly-spoken, and given that is the case, we all tend to hear what each of us is saying in any social setting, and more importantly, we leave room for people’s responses.
But not on Christmas Day at my niece’s home. It seemed to me that some people were able to conduct several conversations simultaneously.
I struggled to keep pace with conversations being tossed around from one end of the table to the other.
My two nieces have loud voices that take over the room, and they can talk!
But there were a few others present who gave them a run for their money, so that, in response to the conversational chaos around me, I found myself recoiling from the general repartee, and smiling when there was a requirement to do so.
It was agony!
I know. It was only one day, and for the most part, I could laugh it off.
But the next day I thought about my actions, the closing down, retiring from the the general conversation, being atypically reclusive, and I began to think that one could easily morph into a socially- sinking ship, and THAT, could eventually lead to something we all fear, dementia!
