My neighbor Ivan is a stalwart, (my opposite, when I think about it). In the middle of winter he’s out in his garden rain, hail, or shine, always busy, always doing things, and always reaping the rewards for his hard work.
He’s also generous and happy to share the bounty of his efforts.
He and his wife are from Argentina and their back garden is awash with all manner of vegetables, plus herbs, and fruit trees, all planted to make the most of the changing seasons, and to support their culinary preferences.
Everything they grow represents a need they have for their native cuisine — tomatoes, capsicums, potatoes, coriander, chili, basil, onion, garlic, (so many varieties), banana and pawpaw trees, fig trees, and so much more. He’s never happier than when in his garden.

I also have another friend whose mother hails from Croatia. Well into her eighties, and though these days, her sons often do the heavy lifting in the garden, it is she who collects the seeds, dries them, labels and dates them, and keeps a log of their needs and habits. You will find her often in her potting room…
